The room is also called "De Saliba" because it displays what Federico De Roberto called the "Pearl" of the Museum. The Madonna with Child is an oil on panel painted in 1497 by Antonello De Saliba, nephew and disciple of the great Antonello da Messina, one of De Saliba's earliest works. The painting's original location was the Church of Santa Maria del Gesù in Catania. This work was part of a polyptych, that is an artwork consisting of several panels, which included three paintings: St. Anthony of Padua, The Resurrection and St. Francis of Assisi.
