The castle has a perfectly square plan (50x50 m) and develops around a courtyard overlooked by four large rectangular rooms. These halls are connected to each other by small square rooms with cross vaults, which give access to the four angular towers, internally crowned by spectacular umbrella vaults.
According to the original project, the Ursino Castle had to combine the military-defensive function with a strong symbolic value, contrasting the secular power of the emperor to the power of the Church, represented by the Cathedral. However, throughout history, the building has changed "forms" from time to time and functions (residential residence, headquarters of the garrisons, barracks), becoming today the home of the Civic Museum of Catania.
Constituted thanks to the donations of illustrious private collectors, the museum fund of the Ursino Castle represents an exceptional testimony of the city cultural history, an extremely rich and heterogeneous collection that documents all the eras of the past through archaeological finds, architectural fragments, epigraphs, paintings, etc.
In particular, it is possible to admire the collection of the Benedictine Fathers and the Biscari collection, but also donations and bequests in the Finocchiaro, Mirone and Zappalà-Asmundo collections.
