Museo Civico Castello Ursino is hosting 111 black and white photos by Ettore Scottsass (a great italian architect and designer) depicting Catania in the 90s. Almost all of them were unpublished until now.
Curated by Barbara Radice with Iskra Grigono and the artistic direction of Christoph Radl.
The exhibition is promoted and produced by Fondazione OELLE Mediterraneo Antico in collaboration with Studio Ettore Sottsass and partnered with Assessorato del turismo, dello sport e dello spettacolo of Comune di Catania.
The exhibition, designed for the open Space of Castello Ursino di Catania, includes the photos taken by Ettore Sottsass (Innsbruck, 1917 - Milano, 2007) in the 90s in Catania, his beloved city.
The photos tells the story of a dynamic Catania: the Baroque style, “Piscaria” (the fish market), the streets, and scene of everyday life.
Ettore Sottsass could be called a “photoreporter of the everyday life”. He started shooting pictures when he was a boy, and since that time he has never stopped. "I was terribly curious", he said. Taking photos was a way to stop time and to document it.
We thank the collaboration of Studio Sottsass di Milano, Fondo Sottsass del Centre George Pompidou di Parigi and Bibliothèque Kandinsky for the high definition of the photo negatives they hold.
