Cast of Queen Constance of Aragon

The front relief of the sarcophagus represents the event of the Annunciation: on one side there is the Nuncing Angel, on which the blessing Hand of God is extended, on the other Mary who responds by standing in front of a symbolic building, where the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Between the two characters, the anonymous sculptor has depicted, in small dimensions, the Queen and the two maids who seem to support her large train, while she presents herself to the Virgin holding out her hands as if begging for protection.

The Queen, represented in a sleeping position on the lid, rests her head on a very delicate cushion with the insignia of the House of Aragon. On the side of the sarcophagus the sacrificed Lamb is depicted with the signs of the Easter victory, as a profession of faith in the resurrection of the dead. On the sides of the Lamb are the symbols of the Evangelists John and Matthew.

The original sarcophagus (14th century) is located in the Cathedral of Catania, in the Chapel of the Madonna.
