The canvases on display in Room 18/bis of the Art Gallery include paintings by 19th century Catanese artists such as Michele Rapisardi and Natale Attanasio. A leading work by Michele Rapisardi is "The Sicilian Vespers", a painting depicting the scene in which a French soldier offends a Palermitan woman, provoking revenge and a popular uprising, known as "The Sicilian Vespers" (1282), which led to the end of Angevin domination. The representation is livened up by a mixture of bodies, faces, limbs and weapons that animate the scene.
